Tommi
Tommi, i believe i'm homesick
I want to be* next to the Rhine again
looking into it
watching the ships passing by
Tommi, i believe i'm homesick
maybe it's the light
and how it's breaking right now
or perhaps because
you can see the Spree from the train
Tommi, i might call
just to hear you say*² : someday, someday, someday
we'll start again from scratch for the last time
The place*³ where we all grew up together
we're all moving there again someday
so that the children we might have
will be born in Cologne**
The place where we all grew up together
we're all moving there again someday
so that the children we might have
will be born in Cologne
will be born
will be born
The city, in which we were young and stupid
and invulnerable
cause everything was so colorful
And it's always been certain
that the day will come
that we both leave
We always wanted to take in
as much as we could
And everywhere in the world
all roads lead to Rome
and at some point, back to Cologne.
The place where we all grew up together
we're all moving there again someday
so that the children we might have
will be born in Cologne
The place where we all grew up together
we're all moving there again someday
so that the children we might have
will be born in Cologne
will be born
will be born
I believe i'm homesick
Tommi, i want to be at the Rhine
just looking into it
cold beverage and rolling a j/c ***
The place where we all grew up together
we're all moving there again someday
so that the children we might have
will be born in Cologne
The place where we all grew up together
we're all moving there again someday
so that the children we might have
will be born in Cologne
will be born
will be born
Annotations:
* the literal translation would be ' stand at the/ next to' but for a lyrics translation, it sounded very inelegant.
what he means is, either standing at the balustrade( left rhine-ish, as we say) or at the shore( right rhine-ish), depending on which side of the rhine you're at in cologne's inner city.
*² the literal translation would be ' i might call for you to say...' but it doesn't really express sufficiently that he calls for the very reason to hear him say those words as assurance.
*³ i chose to translate ' where' / ' there' with ' the place' cause it let's the following verses flow a bit nicer and it offered room for the intended nostalgia, melancholy and love for the city in the translation.
this part is also sung in the local dialect "Kölsch".
that's why it was a bit harder to find the right translation cause it doesn't follow the rules of standart gerrman at all, so a little bit deviation was necessary.
he sings ' all the children we can have' but it essentially means the children they might have.
** 'Kölle' is dialect for Köln, Cologne .
*** i'm pretty sure he means a spliff, cause the genus would be different, if he alluded to rolling a cigarette.
