Á Sprengisandi (Ríðum, ríðum)
Ríðum, ríðum og rekum yfir sandinn,
rennur sól á bak við Arnarfell,
hér á reiki er margur óhreinn andinn,
úr því fer að skyggja á jökulsvell;
Drottinn leiði drösulinn minn,
drjúgur verður síðasti áfanginn.
Drottinn leiði drösulinn minn,
drjúgur verður síðasti áfanginn.
Þey þey! þey þey! þaut í holti tófa,
þurran vill hún blóði væta góm,
eða líka einhver var að hóa
undarlega digrum karlaróm;
útilegumenn í Ódáðahraun
eru kannske að smala fé á laun.
útilegumenn í Ódáðahraun
eru kannske að smala fé á laun.
Ríðum, ríðum, rekum yfir sandinn,
rökkrið er að síða á Herðubreið,
álfadrottning er að beisla gandinn,
ekki er gott að verða á hennar leið;
vænsta klárinn vildi ég gefa til
að vera kominn ofan í Kiðagil
vænsta klárinn vildi ég gefa til
að vera kominn ofan í Kiðagil

Translation
On Sprengisandur*
Let's ride, ride, ride over the sand
the sun is setting behind Arnarfell*,
around these parts there's many an unclean spirit
because the shade is starting to fall on the glacier ice.
The Lord lead my steed,
the last leg of the journey will be difficult.
The Lord lead my steed,
the last leg of the journey will be difficult.
Hush, hush! hush, hush! in the hillock, a fox ran,
its dry mouth she wants to wet with blood,
or else, someone was crying
with a strangely deep male voice.
Outlaws in Ódáðahraun*
are perhaps secretly herding sheep. 1
Outlaws in Ódáðahraun*
are perhaps secretly herding sheep
Let's ride, ride, ride over the sand,
the darkness is falling on Herðubreið.
The Queen of Elves is harnessing her staff,
it's not good to end up in her way.
I'd give my best horse in order to
arrive in Kiðagil*.

- 1. In Iceland, sheep traditionally roam free on the mountains in summer. Outlaws used to steal sheep now and then, for food.

Author's comments:
*Sprengisandur is a desert roughly in the center of Iceland. It was the quickest route between the north-east and south-west parts of the country, but was often avoided because of the great difficulty of passing through it. It was believed to be haunted by all kinds of ghosts and spirits. Arnarfell is a mountain along the route. Ódáðahraun is a lava field at the edge of Sprengisandur. Kiðagil is a narrow gully that served as the end point of the Sprengisandur route. More information on Sprengisandur can be found at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprengisandur
