Grótti
Awaken, if you want to listen to
our chants and tales of yore.
Hoï hoï i ho-i hoï hoï i hoï-i-hi

that quern was named Grótti.
Hoï hoï i ho-i hoï hoï i hoï-i-hi

They sang and swung the spinning millstone.
On a ship, to giantesses Fenja and Menja,
Mysing1asked to grind salt.
He asked them to grind more.

- 1. A Swedish sea-king who defeated the Danish king Fróði, from whom he took the huge quern Grótti and the two giantesses who could move it.
- 2. Literally, the word "kvernaraugat" means "eye of the quern", while the English word "maelstrom" comes from Dutch "maalen" ("to grind") and "stroom" ("flow, stream").

Author's comments:
The lyrics come from Grottasöngr ("Song of Grótti"), from the Poetic Edda. The chapter tells the story of the Danish king Fróði, during whose kingdom emperor Augustus imposed a period of peace, a.k.a. Pax Romana ("Peace of Rome"). During this time, Fróði was gifted a magic quern, which could grind anything, from gold to peace, but was so heavy it couldn't be moved by any. Fróði later bought two enslaved giantesses, whom he forced to work restlessly night and day, to grind him riches, peace and joy. The giantesses started to sing "Grottasöngr" while grinding and so, they ground and army led by the sea-king Mysing, who killed Fróði and brought Grótti and the giantesses with him on his ship.
