This song is based on the German fairytale "die sieben Raben" ("The Seven Ravens") by the brothers Grimm.

In the fairytale, a father cursed his seven sons that they became ravens. Their sister decided to go look for them and went on a hopeless journey. After a lot of troubles she found out that her brothers were locked in the mountain of glas, which could only be opened with a bone of a hen. The stars gave her such key, but she lost it and had to cut off her own finger to open the door. Inside, she met her dwarf, which offered her food and wine. She ate and drank and dropped her family's sigil ring into one of the cups, by which her brotheres later recognised her. They wished to became human again and thus, their wish was granted transforming them back.
