This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things lyrics
- Gatsby:
The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald. It tells the story of Jay Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire who holds extravagant parties. Taylor herself is known for having parties in her Rhode Island mansion. The most famous party is her annual Fourth of July celebration, which is frequented by the likes of Ed Sheeran.
- Here's a toast to my real friends:
Taylor has several friends who have stayed by her side throughout her fallout with Kanye West, including Ed Sheeran, Selena Gomez, and Abigail Anderson-Lucier, who she met during her freshman year of high school. She wrote some of her friends' names on a shirt she wore in the “Look What You Made Me Do” music video, which was a recreation of a shirt she wore in her 2009 “You Belong With Me” video.
- And here's to my baby:
Joe Alwyn, Taylor’s boyfriend as of the song’s release, has supported her through some of the hardest times of her career, including the aftermath of the revival of her feud with Kanye West.
It was revealed in “Call It What You Want” that Taylor encouraged Joe to leave her, worried that he wouldn’t want to deal with the media attention he would inevitably get while dating her. However, he chose to stay.
- And here's to you
‘Cause forgiveness is a ...:
Taylor had previously forgiven Kanye for the whole 2009 VMA incident (both publicly and musically, in her 2011 song “Innocent”), they became friends and Taylor even presented him with his Video Vanguard Award at the VMA’s six years later. However, since forgiveness is a nice thing, Taylor had to take it away because – as stated in the chorus – Kanye breaks nice things and that’s why he can’t have them.
