Ríðum, Ríðum [Á sprengisandi]
Ríðum, ríðum, rekum yfir sandinn
Rennur sól á bak við Arnarfell
Hér á reiki er margur óhreinn andinn
Úr því fer að skyggja á jökulsvell
Þei þei, þei þei, þaut í holti tófa
Þurran vill hún blóði væta góm
Eða líka einhver var að hóa
Undarlega digrum karlaróm
Ríðum, ríðum, ríðum, ríðum…
Þei þei, þei þei, þei þei, þei þei…
Ríðum, ríðum, rekum yfir sandinn
Rökkrið er að síga á Herðubreið
Álfadrottning er að beisla gandinn
Ekki er gott að verða á hennar leið
Óðinn leiði drösulinn minn
Drjúgur verður síðasti áfanginn
Óðinn leiði drösulinn minn
Drjúgur verður síðasti áfanginn
Óðinn leiði drösulinn minn
Drjúgur verður síðasti áfanginn
Óðinn leiði drösulinn minn
Drjúgur verður síðasti áfanginn

Translation
Let’s ride, let’s ride
Let’s ride, let’s ride, let’s carry on on the road1
The sun is setting down behind Arnarfell2
Here wanders the very impure spirit
When it dusks over the glacier
Hush, hush, a fox fled on the hill
She wants to moisten her palate with blood
Or it could have been somebody screaming
With a remarkably coarse male voice
Let’s ride, let’s ride, let’s ride, let’s ride...
Hush, hush, hush, hush...
Let’s ride, let’s ride, let’s carry on on the road
The twilight is descending over Herðubreið3
The queen of elves is bridling her horse
It is unwise to stand in her way
May Odin guide my steed
The last stage is getting tough
May Odin guide my steed
The last stage is getting tough
May Odin guide my steed
The last stage is getting tough
May Odin guide my steed
The last stage is getting tough

Author's comments:
The song refers to the massive desertic plateau “Sprengisandur”, located roughly in the centre of the country, which was crossed since the Middle Ages by a road (commonly indicated simply as “the sand”) that traversed the whole island south to north, crossing the desert mainland, instead of keeping to the inhabited coastline.
The road was roamed by outlaws and was believed to be haunted by ghosts, spirits, and creatures of myth of all kinds. Travelling on it was considered an extremely dangerous ordeal.
Find here the track of the modern road across the Sprengisandur.
